Our
Projects
Claygate Village Association is a friendly community group that has been organised to celebrate and promote our beautiful village. We are a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about our local neighborhood and work hard to improve it. Our main aim is to encourage everyone to get involved in the community and help make Claygate a better place. If you want to find out more about our mission, we welcome you to join us!
CLAYGATE: THE WAY FORWARD
In a packed meeting at Holy Trinity Church in November 2023, the Claygate: The Way Forward (CTWF) initative was launched. Since then working groups have researched six key areas: Shops and Businesses, Transport and Parking, Housing, Environment, Health and Wellbeing, and Leisure and Recreation. To understand the wishes of residents the intiative developed and conducted a comprehensive village-wide survey. Over 1614 people responded - more than 25% of the adult population of Claygate. Now, seven months on, the working groups have studied the findings of the survey and proposed recommendations for the way forward. The whole process, including the survery findings and recommendations, has been detailed in the CVA's report.

Christmas Lights Switch on
The CVA has been organising the Christmas Lights since 2003 and both the decorations and the switch-on event have evolved over the years.
We close The Parade to traffic, local community groups set up stalls and most shops stay open. There is a wide choice of refreshments and things to buy, and a roundabout for youngsters.
Entertainment is provided by Claygate Scout and Guide band, Thames Valley Morris Men and the choirs from local shools. The lights are ceremoniously switched on early in the procedings and fireworks mark the conclusion.
The event is funded by local shops and businesses, Surrey County Council, Claygate Parish Council, Holy Trinity Church and a bucket collection on the night.
Open Gardens
Started in 2000, this summer event continues every few years.
In June 2023 there were 10 gardens, two allotment sites and the new gardens at Holy Trinity Church and the Recreation Ground. The weather was lovely, and more than 100 people enjoyed the delightful gardens, meeting old friends and making new ones. Funds were raised for the CVA and various charities chosen by the host gardeners.
Claygate in Bloom
Claygate in Bloom was formed in 2006 and in the following years some big improvements were made to the planted environment with funding from local councils. We also entered the South-East in Bloom competition four times.
The group has brought many benefits to the village, the most important being community participation in improving the shared environment - bringing together local volunteers and organisations supported by local businesses and local councils.
Currently we concentrate on planting and watering the tubs in The Parade and a few flowerbeds. Many volunteers are involved but more are always welcome.
